The easiest vegetables to grow in your garden

August 05, 2022

With spring just around the corner, it is the best time to start growing your garden. There is no better feeling than harvesting vegetables that you have grown yourself. Although it may seem intimidating at first, growing vegetables becomes easy once you get the hang of things, and you rarely need a large space to grow them. Vegetables are one of the easiest plants to grow- only requiring good soil, proper drainage, fertiliser, and sufficient sunlight. Not only does growing plants serve to provide you with fresh tasting greenery, but also saves you money as well. Here at That Plant Shop, the leading online plant nursery in Sydney, we understand the importance of getting beginners growing their own vegetation, providing a list of the easiest vegetables to grow for beginners.

Lettuce
Lettuce is one of the easiest vegetables to grow. Instead of having to buy your lettuce ahead of time, and letting it rot in the fridge, consider growing them and harvesting them whenever you need it. Almost all gardens can grow healthy green lettuce, as it can be sown directly into your garden bed and can be grown all year round in various different climates. If you plan on growing lettuce in the summer, be sure to provide it enough shade and harvest at smaller sizes.  There are so many different variations of lettuce, that you will almost never get tired of the endless supply. Unlike a lot of plants, lettuces can be cut as they grow, so each plant can be harvested several times.

Tomatoes
Although it may require a little more time to invest, there is nothing better than cooking with fresh tomatoes. You can grow tomatoes from the seed, or from transplants- where you can find in online plant nurseries. When planting them, be sure to choose a sunny spot with well-drained soil. Ensure that your soil has plenty of compost and manure, so that it is well fertilised. A sprinkle of garden lime will help prevent the base of the fruit to rot as well. If your vine is taller, consider inserting a garden stake to support the growth, as often tomato plants can become very top heavy.

Basil

Basil is a great and easy vegetable to grow, often adding a little pop of colour and freshness to many of your dishes. A common type of basil is the sweet basil- it has a very strong fragrant that will help flavour any pasta dish. Basil loves sunlight, so it is recommended to grow them in the outdoors in summer when the soil has warmed up. The soil should be moderately fertile and moist with well-draining.
